01 — The house

Authentic taste,
pure ingredients

Established in 2021 at VPO Hatwas, Tehsil Nagrota Bagwan in District Kangra, KPU FOOD was set up with a simple intention — to preserve the culinary heritage of Himachal Pradesh and make genuine Himalayan food products available beyond the hills.

The valley around Kangra grows some of the finest mangoes, jamun, amla, wild bamboo shoots, rhododendron blossoms and hill herbs in the country. For generations these were turned into pickles, chutneys, sharbat and murabba in home kitchens, following recipes handed down without ever being written. We took those same recipes into a clean, well-organised processing unit and standardised them — so the flavour stays exactly as it should, batch after batch.

Every jar we send out is prepared in small batches. Fruit is sorted by hand, spices are ground fresh, oil and sugar are measured to the recipe rather than to a cost target, and nothing leaves the unit without a tasting check. That discipline is why families keep re-ordering and why retailers across Himachal Pradesh find our Himalayan food products easy to sell.

Sourcing happens within the Kangra belt wherever the season allows, which keeps the raw material fresh and supports growers in and around Nagrota Bagwan, Palampur and Dharamshala.

05 — The standard

Why buyers trust our Himalayan food products

Sourcing

Sorted, not blended

Fruit and vegetables are graded before they reach the kettle. Anything bruised, under-ripe or off-season is rejected rather than mixed in to make up weight.

Character

Inspired by Himalayan flavours

Buransh, bamboo shoot, aelu and jamun are not novelty add-ons here. They are what this region has always cooked with, and what makes the range worth stocking.

Hygiene

Clean line, every batch

Sanitised equipment, covered handling, filtered water and a documented cleaning routine before and after each production run.

Control

Checked batch by batch

Taste, texture, colour and seal are checked at packing. Batch and date coding lets us trace any jar back to the day it was made.

Supply

Planned, not improvised

Seasonal Himalayan food products are produced in season and stocked, so distributors are not left waiting when demand peaks around festivals.

Pricing

Honest and steady

Trade pricing stays stable through the year and margins are worked out so the shelf price remains realistic for a Himachali household.

06 — The method

How our Himalayan food products are made

Six controlled stages, in order, for every batch that leaves the Nagrota Bagwan unit.

STAGE 01

Ingredient selection

Raw material for our Himalayan food products is procured from growers in and around the Kangra valley, then graded on arrival.

STAGE 02

Cleaning & preparation

Washing in filtered water, trimming, de-seeding and cutting to a uniform size so cooking is even across the batch.

STAGE 03

Traditional cooking

Fresh-ground spices, measured oil or sugar and slow open-kettle cooking, exactly to the family recipe each product came from.

STAGE 04

Quality inspection

Taste, consistency, colour and acidity are checked before packing. A batch that does not match the standard is not packed.

STAGE 05

Hygienic packaging

Filling into sanitised food-grade jars and bottles, sealing, capping, labelling with batch and date, then shrink-wrapping.

STAGE 06

Storage & dispatch

Finished Himalayan food products are cartoned and stored away from direct sunlight, with dispatch scheduled through the week.

07 — The inheritance

In Himachal, preserving food was never a business idea first. It was how a household got through winter.

Every one of our Himalayan food products starts in a season. Mangoes were cut and salted in early summer. Bamboo shoots were pickled when the monsoon pushed them up. Amla was boiled into murabba after the first cold nights, and buransh flowers were pressed into squash in spring.

KPU FOOD grew out of exactly that habit. What changed is the scale and the discipline: stainless steel instead of open courtyards, measured recipes instead of a handful, sealed jars instead of cloth-tied matkas. What did not change is the taste of the Himalayan food products themselves. When someone from Kangra opens a jar of our chukh or bamboo pickle, it should remind them of a kitchen they already know.

Serving notes
Red chilli chukh

A spoon stirred into curd, or spread thin on a paratha. It also lifts a plain dal.

Buransh squash

One part squash to four parts chilled water, ice, and a squeeze of lemon.

Mixed fruit jam

Beyond toast — folded into curd, on pancakes, or as a filling for hill-style buns.

Amla candy

An after-meal digestive, and a genuinely good snack for a long hill journey.

Bamboo pickle

Pair with rice and rajma. A little goes a long way.

Jamun chutney

Serve alongside grilled or tandoori dishes to cut the richness.
